On January 14th, Simply the Best Catering worked with Inspired Grace to create a memorable wedding reception for Amanda & Luke at the Argenta Community Theater. Guests were greeted with passed hors d'oeuvres and beverages as they arrived. This wine display was transformed into pies & cheesecakes in lieu of a traditional wedding cake.

A wonderful new venue, the Castle on Stagecoach, is now available to rent for events. The grounds could accommodate almost any number of guests. Behind the house (pictured above), near the pool would be a great location for wedding reception. A bridal portrait taken at the base of the turret would be breathtaking!

This picturesque tree and space around it would be a wonderful area for a corporate picnic, family BBQ or wedding reception.

A wedding ceremony would be very romantic near the pond.

The guest house can be used as bride's dressing room.

Attention to lovers of all things Southern and vintage! The stables would be the perfect setting for a rehearsal dinner, large family gathering or corporate retreat.

After the ceremony, chairs were moved to seating tables on the lawn and inside the galleries.

UALR honored Dr. B. Alan Jean Sugg

at the sixth annual Finale Gala on Saturday, April 23, in the Jack Stephens Center benefiting the university’s arts programs. Sugg, the president of the University of Arkansas Systems since 1990, will retire on June 30 of this year.

Finale celebrates the arts in Central Arkansas and is the premier fundraising event for UALR’s arts programs. The dinner gala features performances and artwork by students. This year’s performance, “Two Tickets to Broadway,” was a dance revue of popular musicals. Proceeds from the event benefit UALR’s art, music, and theatre arts and dance students and programs.

Presenting sponsor of the 2011 event is Glazer’s Distributors of Arkansas. Premier sponsors include Chip and Cindy Murphy and Simmons First National Bank, and sustaining sponsors are Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield and Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

Rob Best Honored with Award

This year’s recipient of the Formica Ben E. Keith Culinary Community Service Award was

Chef Rob Best.

Here is the speech given by Rusty Mathis of Ben E. Keith

Rob not only agreed with Santo’s stance on giving back to the community & organizations around you; he was right beside Santo on many occasions. He has been in the Central Arkansas culinary field for over 30 years. Rob's legacy will be carried on by the many chefs that have been through his doors, and are now known throughout the community as well. In all likelihood every person in this room has attended an event he has catered. There is no doubt in my mind that he has changed the landscape of the culinary industry in Central Arkansas. He has worked diligently with Todd Gold over the past several years to the see the culinary school established in Little Rock. He has served in any role asked of him in countless organizations – the NLR A&P Commission, the Arkansas Hospitality Association, the Chamber of Commerce on both sides of the river – just to name a few. He has supported efforts to feed the homeless, by not only giving excess food to those in need, but by giving of his time at the Compassion Center, Potluck, and the Gospel Rescue Mission.

Rob is known as the type of person who would literally give you the shirt off his own back. Just a quick glance at the numerous events he has been a part of and you will see his giving spirit. He has been involved in many fundraising events for groups like Make-A-Wish, Easter Seals, Ducks Unlimited, the Arkansas Arts Center, the American Heart Association and Lakewood United Methodist Church.

In 2004, Rob was inducted into the AHA & ACF Central Arkansas Chapter’s Hall of Fame. He was awarded the Salut Au Restaurateur in 2005. He owns and operates both Simply the Best Catering and Best Impressions Restaurant and teaches full time at Pulaski Tech in the culinary department.

Rob will certainly be remembered for these awards and accomplishments, but also for how much he gives back to everyone around him. He has worked diligently to make central Arkansas a better place to live and even better place to eat.

Chaired by Lisa Baxter, the biennial two-night event raises funds for art acquisitions and educational programs for the Arkansas Arts Center. Since its beginning, Tabriz has raised almost $6 million which has funded the art acquisition for the Arts Center’s world renowned permanent collection and supported the Arts Center’s educational programming.

The Thursday night event was a fun, casual party featuring a sophisticated silent auction full of boutique items. The lighting was provided by Chris Pritchard with CWP Productions.

Party guests were able to watch artists

from the Arkansas Arts Center Museum School at work.

Guests enjoyed specialty cocktails, wine, and ales along with classic American fare

while bidding on auction items throughout the Arts Center.

Saturday evening was a lavish black-tie Gala designed by Creative Director Delaney T. Bagwell.

As a mom, I am always conscious of what my son eats on a daily basis (and particularly at parties when kids get out of control and load up on sweets!), so I thought it would be great to present fruits & veggies in a stylish and fun way that would appeal to both the parents and children.

Kristine did an amazing job and really went above and beyond by purchasing all the ingredients herself, and also created the most beautiful arrangements made ONLY of veggies. She created a garland out of brussel sprouts to lay in front of the display, and put together gorgeous artichoke and purple cabbage arrangements to adorn the table. Wiley Valentine created fabulous tags that were clean & modern, which dressed up our fruits and vegetables beautifully. To bring all the elements together, I created a backdrop out of artichoke green fabric, purchased all the containers and vessels for the snacks, and also prepared a custom made linen for the display table.

Even though it is freezing in New York, I think our s’mores bar above would make anyone excited for a camping trip. For this shoot, we used tree trunks and natural wood as the dessert vessels to create a camping vibe. We made gooey marshmallow treats like S’mores cupcakes (get the look by using a kitchen torch with marshmallow meringue frosting), s’mores mousse shots, homemade mallomars, and fluffernut chocolate chip sandwiches. We also included some delicious chocolate from Vosges Haut Chocolat, mushroom chocolate truffles, and chocolate bark. We cut chalkboard and burlap tags with pinking shears for s’mores dessert tags. Want some fun ideas for s’mores toppings? Swap out traditional graham crackers for homemade chocolate chip cookies or sandwich your marshmallows with nilla wafers. You can also include some healthy toppings for your s’mores bar like granola and fruit. Summer can’t come soon enough…

Arkansas Baptist Children's Homes has released a new cookbook which celebrates the many opportunities people have to gather at the table for food, fun, faith, and fellowship. Smilemakers . . . In the Kitchen II: Menus & More contains over 570 recipes including 75 complete menus for every occasion. Proceeds from the book sales go to the 400 children in the care of ABC Homes.

John & Angelica Rogers graciously opened their home for Soiree at Snake Hill to benefit the Wildcat Foundation last Saturday. The Wildcat Foundation helps the young men & women of North Little Rock High School and subsequently the city as a whole. Since 2004, the Wildcat Foundation has contributed over $500,000 toward enhancing student life at the High School. Guests were able to watch the Hogs and the World Series, enjoy great food & get an up close look at priceless sports memorabilia.

The wedding ceremony & reception for Jennifer & Clay was held at the Arkansas Arts Center.

After the ceremony, we transitioned the Atrium for the reception. The bride's cake was provided by Blue Cake Co.

Wedding favors were placed at each seat for the guests. Distinctive Designs by Tanarah furnished the floral arrangements for the wedding.

Clay's mother made these adorable brownie bites. The wedding guests were encouraged to dip the brownies in chocolate and add their desired toppings. Yum!

DJ Hollywood with Central Arkansas Entertainment was the musical entertainment for the evening. A good time was had by all!

We used a lot of serving pieces that Lexie supplied. Some pieces were from family and others were found at antique stores and flea markets. The buffet turned out really cute!

Along with beer & wine, nonalcoholic beverages were served from punch jars.

Mickey's made this beautiful wedding cake; the photo does not do this overlay justice -it was absolutely stunning!

Mickey's also made these delicious cheesecakes for the groom.
